On Sunday Chesham & Ley Hill Golf Club were knocked out of the Hillman Trophy by the mighty Woburn Golf Club. This was truly a David vs Goliath contest, like Gomersal & Cleckheaton FC vs Manchester City, or San Remo vs Brazil! The difference in the two clubs is immense, Woburn have three 18-hole courses; Ley Hill have one nine-hole loop, Woburn have fifty greenkeepers; Ley Hill have three! The format of the competition requires each club to field three single-figure players – and Woburn had a pool of 300 to choose from – whereas Ley Hill needed to field all three of theirs! Nevertheless, Ley Hill fought a spirited contest, and weren’t daunted by the length and difficulty of the Woburn Duchess course. Perhaps the Ley Hill players were distracted by the wonderful scenery, as the course meandered through the pine-laden forests. It was a chance for the visitors to play a top 100 course, and with nothing to lose, they battled hard to the end. The final result was 6-1 to Woburn and Ley Hill now proceed to the plate competition.
