Monday night league - week 7
The heavy rain moved away just in time, and week 7 of the Chesham & Ley Hill golf league was bathed in glorious evening sunshine. Leaders Chipperfield strengthened their place at the top of the table with a sensational 54-47 victory over Chorleywood Golf Club. Danny Truter led the way with the evenings best score of 22 points, ably supported by team captain Martin Adams (17pts). Remarkably, Chorleywood’s score of 47 points would have beaten any other team on the night!
In a low-scoring contest, Golden Eagle recorded their first win of the season against high-flying Ley Hill School. James Dormer added a steady 16 points for the pub side, and Luke Howarth collected the men’s longest drive on the way to their 39-35 victory. The Juniors, aided by two of their parents, moved to second place in the league, with a fine 46-39 win over West Herts. Once again, fourteen-year-old Freddie Passingham was their leading player, with a fine 20 points, and in the process beating his [ex-pro] father’s gross score!
The closest match was between 1879 Tennis Club and the Ley Hill Golf Club team. Captain Sheila Jalland (17pts) guided her Tennis Club team to a 46-44 victory and severely blunted the golf club’s title defence ambitions. Sheila also won the nearest-the-pin prize on the short twelfth hole. Claire Moore scored a valuable 16 points and won the ladies longest drive prize. In another close match, Bovingdon FC edged out Berkhamsted Driving Range 45-43. Karl Diggins and Oliver Beale scored 17 points.
Harewood Downs were convincing winners over Ley Hill Cricket Club. Rob Craddock was the leading Harewood player with 17 points, and fourteen-year-old Zack Smith contributed a useful 15 points off his miserly five handicap.
