Monday night league - week 10

With one week of league fixtures remaining there are still four teams vying to join Chipperfield in the final of the Chesham & Ley Hill Golf League!

Having already secured their place in the final, Chipperfield took their foot off the gas, and suffered a surprise defeat to Ley Hill School. Chris Hewitt – defying the traffic from Greenwich – was quick out of the blocks and amassed an impressive 21 points. Several teams will be hoping that Chipperfield are more motivated next Monday when they play 1879 Tennis Club, in what could be a forerunner to the final.

The Tennis Club can now decide their own fate, and are the most likely team to join Chipperfield in the final thanks to a 57-52 victory over West Herts. The Watford side were below strength thanks to a club tour in the Cotswolds, however their reserves put up a spirited fight, and their losing score would have been good enough to win any of their previous fixtures. Alan Cripps was the leading Tennis Club player with 23 points, which proved to be the best score of the night.

Bovingdon FC have a mathematical chance of reaching the final, but they must rely heavily on other results, and realistically they stand about the same chance as Scotland reaching the next round of the World Cup! Their 51-50 victory over Harewood Artisans was the closest match of the night. Captain Ian Birkett recovered from a poor start and then, in his own words, “played the best seven holes of his life”! Rupert Pilgrim carried off the men’s longest drive for the third time this year!

Ley Hill Golf Club were far too strong for strugglers Berkhamsted Driving Range. Club captain Matt Yerrell (20pts) ensured that his team are in the best possible position, should Tennis Club slip up next week, and wife Julia Yerrell recorded the ladies longest drive.

Chorleywood were also too strong for Ley Hill Cricket club. Simon Wood (20pts) produced another fine performance and he was ably supported by Nigel Gray and Jonathan Lidster who were also playing off single-figure handicaps.

In the final match, Golden Eagle swept to an unlikely win against Juniors. Simon Black recorded his best score of the year (22pts), but credit should be given to Jake Passingham from the Juniors side, who scored 16 points off a meagre 3 handicap! It was not all gloom for the Juniors as Finlay Kirkham won the nearest-the-pin competition.
