Monday night league - week 12
FINALS NIGHT

The Chesham & Ley Hill Golf League ended in the most dramatic fashion as the two leading teams shared the league title! The Chipperfield side had led for most of the season until they were finally overtaken by 1879 Tennis Club in the last week of the league. The Tennis Club finished top by points difference, a small margin akin to goal difference in football, but, to actually win the league, both teams would have to go head-to-head in the final.

The final was incredibly close, and the packed clubhouse gasped in amazement as the results were announced. Both teams had scored 53 points, which meant that the league had been tied and both teams would share the £700 prize pot!

For the Tennis Club, Gary Martin (20pts) and Pam Munday Cripps (19pts) were the best performers. For Chipperfield, it was Danny Truter (19pts) and Nick Asbridge (18pts) who led the way, but credit should also go to captain Martin Adams, who scored a vital 16 points from his eight handicap.

Remarkably, the third/fourth play-off game also ended in a tie! Ley Hill School, the same team that had finished bottom of the 2025 league, were pitted against the Ley Hill Golf Club team. It had been a remarkable turnaround for the school, and it was fitting that they held off a strong challenge from the home side to share third place. James Benson (20pts) was the school’s star performer, while captain Julia Yerrell (18pts) led the golf club’s challenge.

All of the remaining league players were invited to enter a separate nine-hole Stableford competition, which was won on countback by Bovingdon FC’s Oliver Beales with 21 points. In second place was Tony Shaw from the Cricket Club. The nearest-the-pin and the longest-drive competitions were won by Jake Passingham from the Juniors side.

The organisers thanked the team captains for their support throughout the season. It is likely that all twelve teams will return next year, but if any other businesses, clubs or organisations are interested in taking part in 2027, now is the time to apply! The league runs every Monday evening from May to July, and teams require a squad of at least seven golfers.
