Monday night league - week 1
After a six year hiatus, the Chesham & Ley Hill Golf Club Golf league got underway with a bang! In fact there were numerous bangs from the thunder and lightning, and it was touch-and-go whether the golfers would actually get onto the course!
Â
Ten teams, representing local businesses, club’s, pubs and societies, will battle for nine weeks, in a quest to earn the big cash prize. Every team has a squad of golfers and four players are selected for each match. Three of the best four individual scores count towards the overall team score.
Â
The aftermath of the storm left a stunning backdrop to an already picturesque course, and the competitors seemed to gain inspiration as they played some excellent golf! Leading the way were the newly formed Juniors side containing the Kirkham brothers. Finlay scored an impressive 19 points (off his 10 handicap) and led his side to a 52-43 win over the West Herts Team. Finlay also won the nearest-the-pin, and brother Oscar won the longest drive.
Â
Also starting strongly were 2018 winners ‘1879 Tennis Club’ who swept to a 57-44 win over Bovingdon FC. Leading the charge was Sheila Jalland who had the best score of the evening (on countback) with 22 stableford points. The closest match was between Golden Eagle Pub and Berko Rangers (the former Driving Range team). Rangers triumphed by a single point after Phil Bandy’s closing 4, on the School House Hill, in near darkness!
Â
In the other matches, Cricket Club were comfortable winners against Ley Hill School, and the Golf Club team were awarded a walk-over because the Yerrells Team mysteriously disappeared during the heavy thunderstorm!
Â
Overall it was a great start to the popular competition and the hostilities will resume next Monday, with hopefully better weather! Special thanks go to all the helpers and staff from the golf club.
