After over 120 years of golf on Sheethanger Common the Boxmoor Golf Club closed on the 31 July 2011. The club was experiencing financial difficulties and the closure was a huge disappointment to the remaining members.  After the closure, some of the members moved to Ley Hill and they brought with them the Boxmoor Masters.  It is traditional for other Boxmoor ex-members to return for this tournament.

The tournament was originally Medal format but changed to Stableford when it transferred to Ley Hill.  Since the transfer Paul Tipper is the only Boxmoor ex-member to win. In 2024 the tournament was abandoned due to heavy rain.
